Herrenchiemsee Castle - the second „Versailles"

In 1878 Ludwig II started building this palace that is also considered to be a dazzling representation of absolutism. Typical elements of French Versailles can be found copied here: the main façade, the Hall of Mirrors and the Ambassador's staircase. The fate and the life story of Ludwig II are narrated in the form of paintings, busts and historical photographs. One room is unique and devoted just to the friendship with Richard Wagner.

Because of financial problems and the sudden death of the builder the castle remained unfinished. Out of the 70 rooms only 20 were completed, the other rooms are still just shells. The main attraction is considered to be the King's Parade Bedroom and the Hall of Mirrors behind it with 17 mirrors.
