Linderhof Castle

Linderhof (Quelle Wikipedia)

Linderhof castle - Ludwig II's "royal villa".

The castle came about from the Maximilian II hunting lodge, the so-called Königshäuschen (king's cottage). From 1874 to 1878 the Linderhof castle as it is today was built to replace the so-called Königshäuschen (king's cottage). It is the smallest of the three castles built by Ludwig II and the only one that was completed in Ludwig's lifetime and was inhabited by him for longer. In the realization of this building in the rococo-style the monarch took inspiration from the works of Ludwig XIV and Richard Wagner.

A highlight of your visit will definitely be a visit to the bedroom with the ceiling paintings and the state bed. The dining room accommodates the famous disappearing table, a well thought-out mechanical device: Ludwig liked dining alone and copiously. So that the idiosyncratic loner could remain undisturbed at his meal, the table would be dropped down by servants in the lower floor laid out sumptuously and then raised up again by means of a winch: Have a nice meal!

Particularly worth a visit: The parklands

The ostentatious gardens, designed and built to be modelled on those of the Sun King, reflected the desire of Ludwig to rule as an absolute Sun King.  Baroque gardens and elaborate terrace and cascade arrangements adorn the gardens: the temple of Venus, the fountain of Neptune with cascade, the Moorish kiosk, the Moroccan house, the Venus Grotto, the Hunding's Hut, the music pavilion and the Gurnemanz Hermitage please the eye of the beholder. News:

From the end of the coming year you will get to the Venus Temple via restored steps: The Bayerische Schlösserverwaltung and the Staatliche Bauamt Weilheim started the work in August 2007. The view from the castle to the Venus Temple will however be somewhat spoilt during the next few months.
